The central circle in Vapor in the Wind depicts various salt lakes threatened with evaporation. Some have already succumbed like Owens Lake, which has been dried up since 1926 (reflooded in 2023 during the heavy storms of late winter). Other lakes depicted: The Great Salt Lake, Walker Lake, Mono Lake, the Salton Sea, Pyramid Lake all have had tumultuous histories of decreasing size and increasing salinities. These types of lakes are vital to migrating birds, offering refuge and food sources during their journeys. In the most extreme cases, like that of the Salton Sea, thousands of fish and birds have died from the toxic and highly saline waters. As lakes dry up, toxic dust affects the surrounding environment.
