"Mazzocchio" is the name for the shape in the center of this painting. During the Renaissance era, the mazzocchio was a complex headgear design that painters meticulously rendered into their work as a way of showing off artistic skill and merit. At the time I was studying platonic solids, geometric forms, and pieces in art history that used geometric imagery to communicate personal, societal, and spiritual values. In "Mazzocchio" I revisited that history in an effort to create a contained explosion of glittering colors around the mazzocchio.
