As a young girl, I have memories of my father and I gathering fossils that were sea creatures and seashells in the Catskill mountains of upstate New York. We lived on the south shore of Long Island and spent our summers sailing on the Great South Bay and playing on Fire Island but we took trips up to the mountains as well and I remember as a child being amazed that sea creatures and shells were embedded in the rocks in the mountains so far away. My father died when I was 19 years old so I cherish those memories of the short time I had with him and to this day, I am a rock and fossil hound. In reality, the fossils we found were never large or of the best quality, but I like to think of our treasures as a magical part of my childhood.
