After receiving her BFA from Washington University in Saint Louis, Tavill began her creative career as a fashion and textile print designer, culminating as the head designer/director for Lilly Pulitzer. Motherhood allowed for a shift in her journey and upon discovering clay, she went on to become an accomplished fine craft ceramic artist. Her ceramic work has been shown in a variety of venues including the Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show, the Grand Gallery, City Hall, Las Vegas, multiple national competitions and is in the permanent collection of the Flint Institute of Art Museum.
Pursuing a post baccalaureate graduate degree through the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in 2020 served as a catalyst to pivot the focus of Tavill's practice toward abstract contemporary art. This has led to inclusion of her new work in the New Jersey Arts Annual 2022 as well as the Education Gallery at Grounds for Sculpture.
Tavill finds her circuitous path as a creative artist to be an ongoing adventure in investigation, discovery and awareness.
Statement
My biomorphic abstraction couples sculpture with drawing, as I reference the complicated experience of connection.
Whether navigating relationships between myself and the greater world, noticing nature’s intricate organisation or observing the socio-political tension as it continues to grow, I find that no connection is free from the inevitability of entanglement.
I am amazed by the organized structure of trees and the complex systems in the human body.
I am astounded by the way that we interact with each other and the earth. Ultimately things go awry, break, become diseased.
However, there is hope in the potential to unravel, clarify and resolve the tangles of confusion finding pathways to clarity and harmony.
This is what I am reflecting upon as my hands connect with the clay.
I build coil upon coil to create gestural volumetric forms.
These forms join, link, or stack together which further emphasizes the connective premise.
I paint the fired clay, developing a matte surface upon which to draw. Drawing with graphite allows for gradation to be explored and a depth to be achieved as the individual meandering lines attach as they twist, layer or separate along the surface of the sculpture.
The toggling between form as line and line as form, paired with negative space and cast shadows, further enriches the sculpture.
This work leads the eye on a circuitous path, often with fits and starts.
As the line remains continual, ends abruptly, or eases into potential resolution, its journey reflects upon our shared experience.
