Carrie Kaufman is a native Oregonian. Art was very much a part her early life. Her father, an architect, and her mother, a multi-talented visual artist, encouraged Kaufman’s creative pursuits from a young age.
Kaufman lived in Hawaii for many years where she owned a fabric boutique, taught contemporary quilting, and manufactured a line of art to wear clothing and accessories. The rich colors of Hawaii and the Asian culture influenced her style.
After coming back to Oregon, Kaufman moved away from working with fabric and developed a distinctive approached to mixed media. She incorporates unusual embellishments and collected objects, layering them with colorful papers, fibers, paint, -- and anything else that catches her eye -- to create her unique artwork. She continues to experiment and evolve her style.
Kaufman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Linfield College. She has a strong desire to make her community a better place and has worked in nonprofit management for 30 years. She is the mother of two grown sons and a delighted grandmother of two. She currently resides in Lake Oswego.
Statement
Not unlike a patchwork quilt, my work is constructed of small forms that build on each other to become a complex image. I like assembling a collection of visual elements that are markedly different from each other. Bits and pieces of paper, fiber, paint and found objects interplay and the image comes to life. My unique technique is the result of many influences and years of experimentation.
It’s easy to take life too seriously. Creating mixed media collage brings balance to my life and whimsy to my world. I love color and texture and I strive to make the walls of our everyday lives sing with pleasure and delight.
